Data Center

 Site Compliance

A truly unique location provides the backbone of the PaperWise Data Center infrastructure. The highly secure, state-of-the-art facility can be found 85 feet underground in a structure carved out of solid rock. Previously a mine, the area contained a uniform layer of Bedford limestone that was excavated for commercial purposes. Once the layer was removed, a clean, dry, constant temperature area was left behind. Columns, composed of the rock, support a 30 to 40-foot ceiling, creating a space designed similar to individual concrete buildings. The underground environment is highly secure for critical computer operations, and maintains a year-round natural air temperature between 60˚- 64˚F, providing the ideal computing atmosphere. Two dehumidification units maintain 50% humidity within the common area to enhance the natural environment. Fire suppression within each building is provided by FM-200 fire protection systems. The common area is protected by a double interlock zoned sprinkler system to ensure loss prevention. Fire detection uses both standard smoke/ionization detection systems and VESDA early detection.

Security Compliance

The facility maintains discrete operations; its Internet presence is limited and general knowledge by the public is minimal. A guard station at ground level monitors traffic and access 24 hours a day, 7days a week, while the above ground space is currently undeveloped, further minimizing attention to the location. The data center contains multiple levels of security including a posted security guard, security card key access levels, visual inspection, video monitoring, and biometrics. Externally, the PaperWise Data Center resembles all other locations within the underground; no signs are used to identify the site.

Equipment

PaperWise servers and network equipment have been designed to offer advanced fault protection and redundancy. All servers use RAID level 5 arrays for storage. Operating systems are installed on separate arrays and all machines have duplicate or triplicate power supplies. Virus protection and security patches are updated continuously. Data is replicated to a second F4 tornado-proof facility linked via a high-speed fiber network. This facility also serves as the 911 emergency service data center for southern Missouri. The second facility offers similar failsafe features to the primary data center. In the event of any primary system failure, any and all PaperWise processes can be brought live in minutes at the secondary facility.

Electrical Compliance

Power is continually supplied and conditioned by parallel, redundant, uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), eliminating any potential interruption associated with conventional switchover. A two million watt generator stands ready to provide continuous back-up power in the unlikely event of an interruption. All electric transformation, switchgear, distribution, UPSs, ventilation and back-up generation, including fuel, is located underground to ensure continuous operation during any unexpected events, natural or otherwise.

Network Facilities Compliance

The collocation combines three independent fiber circuits, each to a tier-one access provider. Additionally, the facility utilizes fiber optic interconnections to offer national connectivity via non-traditional public switched telephone network routes. This capability guarantees the greatest in-route diversity and bandwidth to meet even the most demanding requirements. Network speeds over 300 MB are available.
